The Arrest of Udhayanidhi Stalin: Political Tensions and the Trisha Controversy 

Senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and Tamil Nadu's Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested on August 4, 2026. The arrest took place at his Neelankarai residence in Chennai. It triggered widespread protests, leading to significant political tension across Tamil Nadu. 

The Cause of the Arrest: 

The arrest followed a public rally on August 3, 2026, in Thanjavur. The DMK organized the demonstration to highlight the Cauvery water-sharing dispute and protest Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu dam project. 

During Ydhayanishi's speech, sections of the crowd began chanting the name of popular Tamil film actress Trisha Krishnan, who is widely considered a close associate of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. In response, Udhayanidhi paused and made a remark that critics described as highly derogatory, misogynistic, and "double-mening" comment. 

A seprate complaint was also filed with the National Commission For Women (NCW).

Legal charges and Detention:

The Thanjavur Police registered an FIR against Udhayanidhi and DMK members, involving multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including insulting women's modesty (Section79), inciting riots (Section 192), promoting enmity (Section 196), and criminal intimidation. Additional charges included violating the TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and the IT Act for disseminating the video, which saw high-drama including police surrounding his home andtransporting him to Sengipattic Police Station. 

Protests and Legal Action:

DMK supporters reacted furiously with roadblocks and protest against the move, which they termed a political vendetta by the TVK government. Meanwhile, Udhayanidhi filed for anticipatory bail in the Madras High Court.
